Vassilis Gikas

Vassilis Gikas is Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (Greece). He holds a Diploma degree in Rural and Surveying Engineering from the NTUA and a PhD in Geodesy from the Univ. of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. His principal research interests are in satellite geodesy and high-precision GNSS, estimation theory and quality assessment, multi-sensor systems and fusion methods for outdoor / indoor positioning and navigation, low-cost / smartphone and wireless sensor networks for localization, mobile mapping systems as well as dynamic monitoring and analysis of structures and physical processes. He authored more than 120 peer reviewed publications in scientific journals and conferences, he is a member of the editorial board of scientific journals, he has served as a guest editor in numerous special issues in journals and has been scientific responsible for the organization of int. scientific conferences and events. He has supervised more than 20 funded research projects and research expeditions and holds two int. patents. In the past he worked for the oil exploration industry in the UK and USA as a positioning and navigation scientist and supervisor in seismic acquisition programs in Europe and West Africa. Also, he worked as a geodetic consultant engineer for the design of civil engineering projects in Greece and has served the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company as the Head of the Topographic Dept. He is a member of several professional and scientific organizations. He is currently co-chair of Com. 4 “Positioning and Applications”, IAG (Int. Assoc. Geodesy) and vice-chair of WG 6.1 “Deformation Measurement and Analysis” of the FIG (Int. Federation of Surveyors).
